CloudFlare is a CDN (Content Delivery Network) service with an active, advanced security layer. Once a website is connected to CloudFlare, its internet traffic is routed through CloudFlare's global network. CloudFlare's network stores a copy of static files close to the website's visitors, ensuring faster data delivery than before. CloudFlare caches resources such as JavaScript, CSS and images. CloudFlare's technology automatically decides which resources to cache based on file extensions, so no special configuration is needed for the website. CloudFlare also compresses every request. CloudFlare's network blocks and limits malicious bot threats before they reach the server hosting the website, meaning less wasted bandwidth and server resources and better performance.

Traffic to a website connected to CloudFlare is routed and filtered through 86 data centers around the world.

Almost all websites can use CloudFlare. CloudFlare works for both static and dynamic websites. CloudFlare is not suitable for websites that stream video or audio directly from the server hosting the website. If the website uses YouTube or Vimeo for embedded videos, it is compatible with CloudFlare. Video or audio streaming should be on a subdomain that CloudFlare does not touch, if the customer still wants to speed up the rest of the website.

No. CloudFlare connects to the server hosting your website only via HTTP and/or HTTPS, exactly like any other visitor to your website.

CloudFlare has huge potential to speed up your website, for several reasons. First, CloudFlare caches your website's static content and distributes it through its global CDN. Because CloudFlare is spread across more than 80 data centers around the world, your visitor gets the data from the location geographically closest to them. In addition, CloudFlare compresses the content so it travels more efficiently over the network. CloudFlare also inspects all traffic to your website and filters dangerous traffic intended to cause harm, significantly reducing bogus requests and the resources your website consumes, leaving them free for legitimate traffic and dramatically improving loading speed.

CloudFlare can filter illegitimate traffic that poses a risk to the website – from preventing SQL injection attacks (SQL Injection and Blind SQL Injection), through preventing XSS attacks, to preventing distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. CloudFlare automatically detects new attacks that emerge and hit websites on its network. Once CloudFlare identifies a new attack, it starts blocking it for the specific websites and for all websites connected to the CloudFlare network. In addition, CloudFlare uses a threat database based on the reputation of traffic sources, preventing untrusted sources from reaching your website.

CloudFlare is not a substitute for proper, responsible operation of the website. Since most websites today are built on open source, the website owner must make sure the version of the solution they use (for example, WordPress) is the latest. There is also no substitute for setting complex passwords, two-factor authentication and changing passwords relatively often. For websites not built on a well-known open-source solution, it is recommended to perform penetration testing with suitable software or a service. CloudFlare will not replace any of these, and they should be done for every website anyway.
