SSL FAQ

SSL (Secure Socket Layer) (as well as TLS) is a protocol that has become the standard for encrypting internet communication between users and websites. Information sent over SSL is secured by encryption designed to prevent eavesdropping on or hijacking of the transmitted data. An SSL Certificate gives businesses and their customers confidence that private information sent to the website, such as credit card numbers, is protected. To establish SSL communication, websites must install an SSL certificate on the web server. Customers know that communication with the website they are browsing is encrypted when their browser displays a small padlock and the website address begins with https instead of http. SSL certificates can be installed on web servers as well as on email servers such as imap, pop3 smtp.
A RapidSSL certificate lets website owners purchase an SSL certificate from a trusted source at a low price. These SSL certificates are intended mainly for small e-commerce websites. RapidSSL operates the Root that issues the certificate, a fact that contributes to stability and to fast, user-friendly issuance and renewal processes.
A Wildcard certificate is an SSL certificate that lets you secure a large number of subdomains (Sub Domains) of the same domain.
When communication takes place over SSL with a web server, the visitor's browser decides whether or not to trust the SSL Certificate after checking the source that issued it. To check this, the browser refers to a list of recognized issuers built into the browser software by its vendor. Most SSL issuers issue certificates relying on the issuance systems they operate, and most browsers, in their various versions, support these certificates. Such certificates are called Single Root. RapidSSL, a subsidiary of Verisign / GeoTrust, operates the Equifax Secure eBusiness CA-1 root, which is responsible for issuing the various certificates. Note that some SSL certificate issuers do not have a Root CA (Certificate Authority) recognized by browsers. These issuers "borrow" recognized encryption certificates and issue "chained" SSL certificates based on recognized certificates. Installing chained SSL certificates is more complex and is not always supported by servers and applications. These certificates are also considered less trustworthy, because root certificates are built in cooperation between issuers and browser vendors and are fully compatible.

An SSL certificate is issued to secure a recognized domain name, a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN). That is, multiple domains or subdomains cannot be secured with a regular certificate. For example: a certificate issued for secure. DnsCloud.co.il will not work on www.DnsCloud.co.il. However, a large number of subdomains can be secured by purchasing a wildcard SSL certificate. For example, a wildcard SSL certificate can secure: www.yourdomain.com secure.yourdomain.com etc.yourdomain.com
