Installing an SSL certificate and switching to a secure website
Now it matters for search engines too: a secure website with an SSL certificate will get priority in the results!
- When Google makes an announcement, it pays to listen. When it has been going on about something for several years,
- it is well worth implementing what it says. That is the bottom line regarding the SSL standard on websites,
- which as of July 2018 becomes the default for websites that do not want Google
- to mark them as not secure.
Do you have an online store, or a business website that includes forms and stores customer details?
It's time to get to know the SSL standard and take care of your website's security.
- If you are a business owner selling products online, or even if you have a business website with contact forms, it's time to get to know the SSL standard and move to a more secure website. In the following article you will learn about the new security protocols, how to prevent damage to your website, and how to adapt it to Google's new requirements.
Google's new website security guidelines
- You certainly wouldn't be happy to discover that Google has suddenly dropped you significantly in the rankings. That is why you should get to know
Google's new guidelines
which from now on apply to all e-commerce websites and websites that use customer details or data. - Anyone who does not obey or comply with them will receive warnings and later even severe penalties. But don't worry, that's exactly why we're here, to sort things out for you.
The move to a secure internet
- Google has officially announced that, starting January 2018, it will begin enforcing the guideline to move to the HTTPS protocol. This applies to all E-commerce websites and to all websites that allow registration, filling in details or any kind of receiving forms sent from other computers. In other words, most websites on the web (yes, even simple business websites with contact forms)
- From now on, the vast majority of websites will be required to install and support the popular and important standard called SSL or TSL (which is completely identical to the previously known SSL standard, and is in fact its more up-to-date version).
- In the past, moving to a secure internet was merely a recommendation, and it is estimated to have contributed to organic ranking. But starting this year, Google has announced that it will be mandatory. It has also explicitly announced that it will start sending warnings to all websites that do not comply with the guidelines. A website secured with the SSL standard
- A website that uses the SSL standard, which is essentially the HTTPS protocol, is more secure. This protocol transfers the messages or information sent from other computers to our website and encrypts them using the SSL standard.
- Why does this matter? The security protocol allows customers' computers and our computer to speak in a language that other computers will not understand, thereby preventing break-ins and data theft.
Who needs to use the SSL standard?
- Anyone who has a website that communicates with other computers must make sure their website is secure. Such communication can take the form of managing personal areas on the website, registrations, contact forms, purchases and the like.
- Whether it is e-commerce stores, websites of educational institutions, hospitals or banks, or even simple business websites with lead forms, all are required to use this standard according to Google's new requirements.
How do you secure your website?
- The first step in securing a website is buying an SSL license from a suitable authorized provider. Prices range from several tens to hundreds of dollars, with each company offering different types and plans of licenses, valid for defined periods of time.
- After purchasing the license, you need to have it installed. The next step is copying a text file called a CRS into the SSL interface. After that, you need to wait for the code to be approved and for the request to create the file package called a CTR.
- Yes, it sounds a bit complicated, and the truth is you don't have to worry about this whole long process going smoothly.
